Intellectually
and intuitively we yearn for authenticity in our lives and
we search for meaning, connection and purpose.
For many of us, work is
a very important part of our lives. Increasingly we want it
to be a truer expression of who we really are. We want to
work not just with our head and our hands but with our heart
and spirit as well and, in so doing, integrate our physical,
intellectual, emotional and spiritual selves on a daily basis
in all that we do.
As our lives become more
complex and sometimes more chaotic, we are continually asked
to juggle competing priorities, to grow, to adapt and to change.
Developing our intellectual capacity was once seen as the
key to personal, professional and organisational development,
however growing our emotional and spiritual intelligence is
now being widely recognised and acknowledged as far more important
in authentic personal and professional success and fulfillment.
The hallmarks of emotional intelligence include; emotional
self awareness, managing emotions, harnessing emotions productively,
reading emotions, handling relationships. (‘EQ Why it
can matter more than IQ’ by Daniel Goleman).
The hallmarks of spiritual
intelligence include: self awareness and self management,
ability to face and use suffering, ability to be inspired
by vision and values, tendency to see connections between
diverse things, tendency to seek answers to fundamental questions
(“Why am I here”, “What is the meaning of
life”), ability to see beyond the conventional. (‘Spiritual
Intelligence – The Ultimate Intelligence’ by Danah
Zohar and Ian Marshall)
